摘 要

One of the modern transformations of China in the early 20th century was a public health movement that swept through major cities, promoting “scientific medicine” and public health as an essential benchmark of a modern nation.Health lectures, exhibits, slide and film shows, and health literature brought modern ideas of hygiene and sanitation to all walks of life in Chinese society. The meaning of public health gained new urgency when national strength was interpreted in Social Darwinian terms. However, public health meant different things to different groups in their attempt to change China.Public health modernization was integral to the struggle for national identity and sovereignty.
